Justice Robert Jackson: "There is no more effective practical guarantee against arbitrary and unreasonable government than to require that the principles of law which officials would impose upon a minority must be imposed generally." (Concurring, REA vs. NY, 1949)
Justice Antonin Scalia: "Our salvation is the Equal Protection Clause, which requires the democratic majority to accept for themselves and their loved ones what they impose on you and me." (Cruzan v. Missouri Dept. of Health, 1990)
Yay! Celibacy for everyone!
I guess all those straight marriages will have to be dissolved, won't they? What else will have to be changed?
I ran into a fascinating comment on Verbal attack patterns in Irish in another blog, which contained a couple examples: "I don't mean to make you feel bad, but..." and "Now, don't take this the wrong way, but..." What she's identifying here is an utterance pattern that linguists call a "Hedge." Hedges should always be avoided whenever that's possible, because they're a way of saying something, predicting the response without letting the other person decide what it will be and then responding to that unsaid item, all at the same time. They're very irritating. The prototypical example of a Hedge is "I know this is a stupid question, but...."
It seems to me that hedges are very useful in straw man arguments, not the least of which is because they confer a sort of omnipotence on the first speaker.
In other news some Alabama senator is trying to ban, what, homosexual books and plays. Uh, dipshit? Thanks to what we need to call the Scalia Doctrine (because it would just fucking annoy our favorite red-faced conservative justice to death) we have to apply this equally to striaghts. So now stuff that promotes the 'straight agenda' must be banned.
Oops. Gee, it sucks to be a bigot when you have to abide by your own damned rules for someone else, doesn't it?
And I'm going to ask a question here that no one has thus far answered. All these sensitive pharmacists whose morals are so offended by hussies buying birth control----are they likewise offended by selling men Viagra and condoms and porn? Funny how that never happens.
Here's what I want. Imagine a world where all the people who keep trying to ram all this stuff down our throats have to suddenly turn around and live by our rules.
It's not fair. Their rules are hateful. They'd have way more fun in our world. So what's their issue?
Discuss amongst yourselves. I'm trying to get Ever After to behave. If you're a writer, have you ever had to explain to someone why you just couldn't get your characters to do what you wanted? Yeah, that's me.
Edited to add Oh, shit, that dipshit from Alabama is serious. Here you go.
Banning Merchant of Venice? wow, I guess the quality of mercy got left out of his DNA.
