GOP Spinning until you wanna puke. Palin broke state law, abusing her Gubernatorial power by trying to get her former BiL fired by pressuring the Safety Commissioner fired, and then fired the Safety Commissioner because he wouldn't abuse HIS office by firing her BiL, but didn't break any laws? Brain hurt yet? McCain and Palin have been whipping people into a frenzy making outlandish claims that Obama is a friend of terrorists, 'palling'' around with terrorists and othersuch nonsense. Now McCain is calming down crowds and rallies where people are flat out saying Obama is a terrorist. And McCain is flogging misleading and flat out lying again by equating Obama's being on the same school reform project as him supporting terrorists and being one himself. Hurting yet? Have a bit of common sense. Obama's statement (and proven by proper investigation): "The gentleman in question, Bill Ayres, is a college professor. He teaches education at the University of Illinois. And that's how I met him, was working on on a school reform project that was funded by an ambassador and former close friend of Ronald Reagan's. And I was sitting on this board with a whole bunch of conservative businessmen and civic leaders and he was one of the people on who was on this board. And he lives in the same neighborhood. Ultimately, I ended up learning about the fat he had engaged in this reprehensible act 40 years ago, but I was about 8 years old at the time, and I had assumed he had been rehabilitated." Being polite to someone during a charity meeting, someone who you have no idea who he is/was, is now deemed 'friends' by Gov Avon Lady Palin? I guess she should step back from the shiny mirror, as she and her hubby were not only friends but political supporters of the AIP leader, the one who got himself blown up trying to buy C4. And now the GOP campaign machine are spinning Obama calling them out for their piss poor behavior and that of their supporters. As if "Kill Obama" "Bomb Obama" as rallying cries at McCain and Palin rallies isn't something to be called out on? Oh Please. Now McCain is trying to placate the crowds. I agree with Shadoutcarver; McCain's calming the crowds at these town hall meetings seems like the sicko fireman setting fires, so he can put them out and look like the hero. well i saw him standing there by the record machine I rock. That is all. Okay, not quite all. But not only did I finish a draft today, but I sent a route I have been working on for !five weeks! Which is still unrated, but consensus around the gym is that it's harder than a 5.7. So if it's a 5.7+, that would make it my second one. And if it's a 5.8, which is what I suspect, then it's my first 5.8. Basically, it turns out that the foothold I was thrashing at is a total freaking misdirect--at least for me--and what I needed to do was lie back on a fairly crappy handhold and stand up on a totally different foothold. And! I remembered how to do the 5.7 I finally figured out how to do elegantly on Monday, sent it all with no dogging on the rope and no thrashing. I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. Spent some time talking with some other climbers while we were there, and one of them, who is also the Climbing Shoe Guy at my local Eastern Mountain Sports, assured me that yes, the Evolvs really do suck. So I think I will be retiring them, because I tried the same route both with those and with my old Sportivas, and footholds I just could not stick in the Evolvs were a cinch in the Sportivas. Alas, the Sportivas are shot--they're a year old--so Tuesday I need to go buy another pair of new shoes. Tuesday, because Climbing Shoe Guy will be at work, and he can help me buy a pair of shoes that do not suck. WIN. Current Mood: AWESOMECurrent Music: Survivorman |

You tell me how much I needed this weekend. I got home and realized just how gorram tired I was. Not to mention I just had two coffees, two Dr. Peppers, and five steak fingers (with ketchup, so I guess I got some veggies in) all day. Finished the other half of a medium pepperoni pizza and some beer, even though I think water would be better for me... I need to take Lady Sally to bed. I'm about to fall asleep sitting up. At least I won't have to cook tomorrow - Mom has a frozen lasagna in her fridge. I just need to bring salad, bread, and maybe some wine. Definitely some beer. (Enough to drown our sorrows if OU plays with their heads in their back pockets.) So I can sleep in long enough to catch up and still be able to get to Mom's, side dishes on hand, on time to help her cuss out Lee Corso on College GameDay (Live from the Cotton Bowl, doncha know). Why am I blogging about it? I should be in bed, good book in hand, water close by, window open just a bit, letting sleep overtake me slowly... G'nite. Current Mood: tired |

Oh, and for cubanchic Alaska panel finds Palin abused power in firing http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081011/ap_on_el_pr/palin_troopergateANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative panel concluded Friday. The politically charged inquiry imperiled her reputation as a reformer on John McCain's Republican ticket.
Read it naked to Amo. I'm sure it'll work for you both. :) (Yes, Daddy loves you.) Current Mood: creative |

John McCain does the right thing. You can say it's a bit late, or that it's because the negativity was only hurting him, but the bottom line is that it's not that easy to tell crowds of supporters what they don't want to hear. They booed him at his own rally! It was the right thing to do, and I applaud him for it. I hope both his running mate and Republicans at large take their cues from him. The tone of those rallies was getting pretty scary. |

Cookies! I don't know if I ever followed up about the blasphemous thing that I baked last weekend, but it was Very, Very Bad. I think my shortening may have been too old. To atone, this weekend I am baking cookies, and maybe a cake if I find time to get more eggs. When Mark sent out the photo of me with the new mixer, his best friend Glen replied, "Just in time for Halloween cookies!" Seemed like a good excuse to buy Crate & Barrel's Halloween cookie cutters and try out the Martha cookie book that my mom sent. I'm also going to attempt to make royal icing and color it. I'm making the chocolate shortbread w/sea salt and cacao nibs that I made over Xmas, Martha's chocolate cookies with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg & cloves, a basic sugar cookie, and one more non-chocolate variety, TBD. I whipped up the dough for the first two already and it's in the fridge so I can bake and package everything at once. I bought some cute Halloween-themed Chinese takeout boxes from Michael's, and I'll put a different type of cookie in each one. Whatever doesn't fit in the boxes is ours! I would like to make holiday cookies for my coworkers this year. I'll probably need some more cookie cutters. ;) Current Mood: hungry |

big-ass pickup update i had to get my laundry (the washer and dryer are in the basement) and take a shower, and at some point the big-ass pickup drove away. before i went downstairs, tho, i heard noises which seemed to be a couple guys changing one of the truck's tires. o.O one of the guys was standing on the sidewalk talking on his cell phone - i couldn't hear what he was saying but he sounded pissed. and now he's gone. i still have no idea who the truck belonged to or why whoever drove it had to park in front of my driveway and then change the tire. the general consensus seems to be that i should have called a tow truck, so if it happens again (because you never know) i definitely will. ass. snurched from chris_walsh and others When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not "As you wish" or the Inigo Montoya speech. "What if I give you my word as a Spaniard?" "No good -- I've known too many Spaniards." "I work for Vizzini to pay the bills -- there's not a lot of money in revenge." "Who are you?" "No one of consequence." "I must know." "Get used to disappointment." "'k." All from the Westley-Inigo swordfight, which is my favorite scene in the movie.... Things I've learned today. And yesterday. And Wednesday. I cannot eat three donuts. Salsa tastes better cold. I am utterly dependent on darth_vice to open salsa jars for me. This is dangerous, as she is likely to eat it all. I can reach the east window by overbalancing and sort of bodysurfing on the piled-up stuff in my room. I cannot, however, get back up without help once the window has been reached. House paint stains jeans just as badly* as artists' oils do, and tends to come in bigger drops. If I buy a book I already have, but can't find, I will find it; however, if I don't buy it, I will really really really want to read it. If I leave a book at home, I will really really really want to read it. Eleven years as a fan of the Earth's Children books has my brain insistent that the Neolithic stone carving known as the "Venus of Willendorf" is properly called a "Doni" or a "Mother figure," neither of which will get me any credit on my art history midterm. We're not calling it the Venus of Willendorf, either. Koenigsegg is apparently only making six CCXR's. SIX. OK, they cost two and a half million dollars and I won't be able to afford one no matter how many are made, but still, I'd kinda like to see one on the highway sometime, at least once in my life. Hell, they won't even be able to use all their available colors! Somebody took a Lamborghini and made it double its horsepower with some creative shopwork and turbocharging. I don't know whether I'm more jealous of the owner's car or the mechanic's talent---oh wait, I do know, and for once it's not the driver. *well, I think. Haven't gotten the jeans in question to the laundry yet, so either or both might come out. |

Friday! Busy. I've taken two weeks' leave from the day job, with the intent of writing, getting my computer situation straightened out, writing, getting Kuro serviced, writing, getting some stuff done around the house, and writing. First section of the wip has gone out to beta readers. pbray reported back in a manner encouraging, which gives me a nice boost as I plot out the next sections. Tonight, hockey, KO & Rachel, baking, laundry.Tomorrow, I hope to find out whether the iMac and/or the iBook can be repaired or if I will need to buy a new back-up system. It's supposed to be a really nice weekend. I hope it's warm enough that I can write on the deck. Current Mood: busy |

Make-Believe Maverick - Part 2 THE CARPETBAGGER As his marriage unraveled, McCain's naval career was also stalling out. He had been passed over for a promotion. There was no sea command on the horizon, ensuring that he would never be able to join his four-star forefathers. For good measure, he crashed his third and final plane, this one a single-engine ultralight. McCain has never spoken of his last crash publicly, but his friend Gen. Jim Jones recalled in a 1999 interview that it left McCain with bandages on his face and one arm in a sling. Make-Believe Maverick - Part 1 Sauce. Hat-tip to ishottheserif.A closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty TIM DICKINSON Posted Oct 16, 2008 7:00 PM At Fort McNair, an army base located along the Potomac River in the nation's capital, a chance reunion takes place one day between two former POWs. It's the spring of 1974, and Navy commander John Sidney McCain III has returned home from the experience in Hanoi that, according to legend, transformed him from a callow and reckless youth into a serious man of patriotism and purpose. Walking along the grounds at Fort McNair, McCain runs into John Dramesi, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was also imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam. *faceplant* In case anyone wondered why "Recs du Jour" is not so much "du jour" these days, it's because:
a) I'm doing a lot of that Working Thing
b) not to mention the stressing over the world economy TANKING thing
c) teeniest of silver linings: I no longer feel seriously stressed about the outcome of the national election thing
d) but the economy has not been at all good for my gut things, which just adds to the exhaustion thing
e) and one way I deal with all this is by re-reading stories I've already recced.
However, I shall attempt to get back in the saddle -- even if it's to post a re-rec, what the heck.
Yes, that's the level I've sunk to. |
