I went to bed in a dictatorship and woke up in a democracy
The Republicans will of course try to spin this as merely a backlash. It was a reaction, plain and simple, a revolt. A revolt against hypocrisy, corruption, the disembowelling of the Constitution, an unjust war fought solely so Bush could say he did better than his daddy, and the horrifying misogyny.
Webb has a slight lead in Virginia, though Allen is acting like a petulant two-year-old and refusing to concede. The South Dakota abortion ban failed. Arizona refused to pass a marriage bill. The GOP's misogyny----they whined repeatedly that a woman of all things would be Speaker of the House. That bitch!
This is not the end, though. This is the beginning. Don't relax. We have a lot of work to do. This admin did to the Constitution what they did to New Orleans---and Baghdad.
Abortion rights and even birth control are under attack everywhere. The Republicans are petty enough and vengeful enough to hold back progress and blame it on Dems. Veterans' rights have been cut. The country has been stripped of its honor, principles, and backbone.
People can make a difference. You can do things. Moveon.org has a get-out-the-vote plan where you can call people on your cell phone and ask them to vote. These aren't cold calls; they come from a list of progressive voters who, I believe, have signed up with Moveon.org. I spent some time this week doing that, because of course of the stresses caused by being in an unfamiliar environment. You can do this, too. We must get out the vote, and get people to give a shit.
There is momentum here. We cannot falter or slow down.
And if you've read the Rollling Stone article about The Worst Congress Ever and how the Republicans utterly locked out the Democrats, you must view President Bush's call for 'bipartisan cooperation' with the disdain he deserves. Where wsa this sentiment when he was riding roughshod over our liberties and telling ever more blatant lies?
