I went to bed in a dictatorship and woke up in a democracy
The Republicans will of course try to spin this as merely a backlash. It was a reaction, plain and simple, a revolt. A revolt against hypocrisy, corruption, the disembowelling of the Constitution, an unjust war fought solely so Bush could say he did better than his daddy, and the horrifying misogyny.

Webb has a slight lead in Virginia, though Allen is acting like a petulant two-year-old and refusing to concede. The South Dakota abortion ban failed. Arizona refused to pass a marriage bill. The GOP's misogyny----they whined repeatedly that a woman of all things would be Speaker of the House. That bitch!

This is not the end, though. This is the beginning. Don't relax. We have a lot of work to do. This admin did to the Constitution what they did to New Orleans---and Baghdad.

Abortion rights and even birth control are under attack everywhere. The Republicans are petty enough and vengeful enough to hold back progress and blame it on Dems. Veterans' rights have been cut. The country has been stripped of its honor, principles, and backbone.

People can make a difference. You can do things. Moveon.org has a get-out-the-vote plan where you can call people on your cell phone and ask them to vote. These aren't cold calls; they come from a list of progressive voters who, I believe, have signed up with Moveon.org. I spent some time this week doing that, because of course of the stresses caused by being in an unfamiliar environment. You can do this, too. We must get out the vote, and get people to give a shit.

There is momentum here. We cannot falter or slow down.

And if you've read the Rollling Stone article about The Worst Congress Ever and how the Republicans utterly locked out the Democrats, you must view President Bush's call for 'bipartisan cooperation' with the disdain he deserves. Where wsa this sentiment when he was riding roughshod over our liberties and telling ever more blatant lies?

Good news in California too- Prop 85, the universal-parental-notification-of-abortion movement, was defeated! I'm starting to have just a little bit of faith in this country again.

A parental notification bill failed in Oregon, too. It gave me renewed faith in my state ... but I still get tears in my eyes when I look at all the same-sex marriage bans that passed (and Oregon passed one of those in '04).

Better, all of it. But miles to go, still.

Those are vile, but still, it's good news that it was defeated.

Indiviaul people can make a difference. This is not the time to relax; this is the time for the real hard work to begin. We can't relax now.

It's already started:

From the college newspaper

"The Democrats didn't win," [DeLay] said, "Republicans lost."

It's an AP article, so I'm sure it's elsewhere, but that quote made me think of this entry.

From which side? I'm a flippin' radical and I agree with this one. The Republicans pissed off people who normally don't vote enough to motivate them to do so and the swing voters, not to mention a significant portion of their Christian Conservative voters (some of whom stayed home and some of whom voted for the least odious alternative in their eyes). (Granted, I haven't seen a breakdown of voters along these lines yet, but this is what I"ve observed directly and it sure makes sense given the circumstances)

While I will be the first to say that the Democrats are certainly my least odious choice much of the time, I'm not seeing any reason to think that people were really voting *for* democrats. They've no clear progressive platform, no real cohesiveness beyond "We're not the republicans", lots of middle of the road "I'll stop supporting abortion if it will get me more votes" posturing, and lots of people at the top who were born to privilege and don't really know otherwise. They just tend to be a bit less assy about it.

Well, some liberals/Democrats (PZ Myers) say the same thing, with the Democrats not having run on a strong progressive platform, but on a "we're not that corrupt scandal-ridden party" platform.

Allen is acting like a petulant two-year-old and refusing to concede.
All the better! If he demands recounts, that allows more time to investigate the reports of voter intimidation and fraud in Virginia.

I find the Republican spin that Dems really didn't win anything to be quite entertaining. Who do they think they're fooling? And Rahm Emanuel better not think he's gonna play nice with the bastards who've crapped on all of us for so long.

Yeah, Allen could end up generating more damage to the GOP machine. Would not make me the least bit sad if that happens.

Interestingly a fair number of 'roots' conservative bloggers, not party types or pundits, agree that the GOP lost and the Democrats won. Their take on it is likely very different than yours, but they know a defeat when they see it.

My spousal unit was joking about Allen and the Republican party head. He kept on saying "Look at Maryland, it is still unsure" and stuff like that on CNN, and Brett said, "He's just like a five year old. 'There's still people! There's still people, we have a chance you doody brains!" I laughed.

As of 5 minutes ago, the MT senate race stands at Tester (D) 50% and Burns (R-incumbent) 48%. The votes in my county (and I think one other county) have to be counted by hand because of a machine malfunction. The tension is driving me crazy.

On one of the forums I belong to, the fundie neocons are screaming about how America is doomed because of the Loony Liberal Left. "The Islamofascists will take over! Women will all have to wear burkas! The Libs will take away all your constitutional rights!"

Because, you know, the Neocon administration has been fighting so hard to protect them.

And of course some of them are calling the rejection of SD's abortion ban and some states' gay marriage bans as a descent into Evil and thus invoking the WRATH OF GOD!!!!111!

...

I'm always amazed by how many people are allowed to wander loose without lithium...

Not only is she the first woman to run the House, she's also third in line for the presidency after Dick Cheney. It will be harder to argue that women cannot handle the job after this.

While CO mostly favored democrats, we still have Marilyn Musgrave (*shudder*), and the people in our "lovely" state voted to define marriage as only between a man and a woman, and also voted against domestic partnerships.

I don't feel victorious at all.

I'm ashamed to say that Michigan voted to ban affirmative action. Of course, Michigan went for Wallace in '68, so I shouldn't have high expectations. We did keep our Democratic female governor, at least.
