Timing is everything
Dear God,

I know you and I chat a lot these days, but I just wanted to express my sincere appreciation that the sheriffs and the cops and the K9s didn't get here till after I helped that lady break into her car. Also, it's nice to know my skills are, uh, still skillful.

There's ten sheriffs over at R's house, the little girl who so torments K with her on-again, off-again friendship. These guys are all wearing plain clothes and bullet-proof vests and white latex gloves. IF they'd gotten here about five minutes earlier I'd have had to explain why I was fishing around in that lady's car door.

Looks like it's going to be a coke bust, too. Yikes. Still, could have been a lot worse.

Hey, wait a second. How come when that lady locked her keys in her car I was the first person she thought of?

Oh, and to complete my day, there's a creepy guy in the hood who's got cameras set up all around his perimeter. Except they're fixed in such a way that he's really looking into peoples' yards and windows.

Ah, my neighborhood.

You have one of those too?

A friend of mine here in town has a creepy neighbor who has cameras pointing into his neighbor's yards. And a few months ago the guy built a deck of sorts on top of his carport, so when he sits up there he has an unobstructed view into my friend's daughter's bedroom window. Apparently the guy is some sort of fundie but has some issues. None of the neighbors like him.

Ya think?!

Isn't that kind of illegal, to peep into somebody's window like that?

None of the neighbors like him.

Can't imagine why. Sounds like the life of the party to me. Well, not of any party I'd want to go, but...

That would be illegal over here anyway.

My friend has talked to the cops
[info]9thkvius
2008-07-23 09:13 pm UTC (link)
and although the guy is teetering on the fence (so to speak), they can't do anything. But now the cops come by to talk to her and the other neighbors, asking how they are doing and such. The police are now suspicious of him and they don't like him already becauue he has become famous for what they call "nuisance" calls, calling the police for anything and everything, calling Animal Control when someone's dog escapes (even when they are chasing him down - happened to my friend), and calling Child Protective Services over trivial things. The guy insists that he is the good guy and ALL of his neighbors are the problem. But the cops? They look at him and his little camera setup and his 12 foor privacy fence and they are totally suspicious of him doing something he isn't supposed to be doing, like a drug lab or kiddie porn or something. So his own willingness to call the cops all the time has drawn their attention onto him. Oh sweet irony, how I love thee.

I'm sure they're small, relatively cheap cameras with no filtering. Maybe your neighbors need infrared headbands!

I'd go over tonight with some hand lotion and smear it all over the camera lenses.

Better yet, you should smear something on it that will scratch the lens or remove the protective coating.

Okay. I'm told that pumice hand soap works well, especially if you ground it in. It's an abrasive and would scratch the lenses.

Quotes a conversation:

"The best way to ruin the front of the lens is to put lots of very small scratches [in], since they'll scatter the light and you'll get a blurry image so polishing compounds of just about any type are best since that's what polishing is. It could be fixed by re-polishing the front of the lens and then reapplying coatings. It's doable - there's some Russian company that does it - but it's expensive and you're best off just replacing the lens in most cases."

You could also use shaving cream to smear the lenses. It can be fixed, but it's a hassle. They'd have to take it apart to clean it.

what's the range of those cams?
Pick a .22LR round with a hard alloy lead bullet.
Or steel darts/copper balls in an .22 high power air(CO2)rifle.(more applicable in Europe)
You guys are still swimming in cheap ammo, use it.

Paint gun. Fifty yards. 'Nuff said.

> I'd have had to explain why I was fishing around in that lady's car door.

I managed to avoid a potential incident recently, myself. I was taking my already-dead cat to the vet's for cremation, and stopped off at the store. I'm glad I had the presence of mind to cover the pet carrier with a coat first, or I'd have expected a conversation with either a cop or a do-gooder when I returned to the car: "Hey, buddy, you forgot to roll down your windows! Lemme check the condition of this animal..."

For the camera guy: magnets on a stick. Wave near camera. Either it's a tape one that a magnet will erase or it's got computer parts in it that magnets will fuck with. Window-proof too.

At least, I think.
