Male feminist blogger pleads guilty to sexual assault
Not just any blogger, but a guy who's made something of a name for himself blogging against porn and rape and other things: In fact, the day after his guilty plea, he took off for a conference. He also paid bail easily: it was $11,000. He raped and videotaped himself raping the act. He's also under investigation for having child porn on his blog. This is his curriculum vitae, which shows that no class of men is immune to rape. Frankly, some of the entries here should chill the bones.

In addition to his pro-feminist work, he is involved with anti-racist, free speech, peace, and anti-globalization movements.

I would have thought, if there was any man we could trust, it would be an active feminist.

I really don't want to think no man is trustworthy.

Are there stories about him doing weird and creepy things in his rape-crisis work, the way there usually are creepy stories about soon-to-be-violent perverts?

God, now I feel sick.

This is, if nothing else, an excellent example of why you can't just trust any man, til you know them very, very, very well.

It's not a question of whether you can trust them---it's a question of how risky trusting them is going to be. "Trustworthy" is the wrong concept, because we can't truly know another person's intentions. We can only decide whether they are worth trusting---from your perspective, not from theirs, a risk-benefit-cost analysis of to what extent it's worth the risk to you.

You get to know a person, whether it's for a few minutes or over a lifetime, and you let them in a given amount, based in part on how well you can take it if they turn out to be harmful. Then if/when you get hurt, it's only a certain amount, an amount you can handle, because you've only let them in so far.

It's a spectacularly fucked-up game, and yeah, cases like these tend to inspire playing very, very cautiously. Greater trust increases the damage done, should it prove to be a mistake.

> no class of men is immune to rape.

I've done enough crappy things to other people in my own life that I'm left with the opinion that everyone's capable of pretty much anything.

I dunno if this guy got into pro-feminist fields so he could better troll for victims ...or perhaps he was putting himself on probation, after a fashion, to better restrict his own darker tendencies.

Maybe both.

Maybe he was trying to balance up his evil deeds with good ones. You know - "If I stop two rapes and commit one I am still in the good books". Or else he REALLY has a split personality.

Honestly I think upbringing and society plus the power to get away with anything makes nearly every man susceptible to these kind of deeds. Patriarchy twists them all and they have to work really hard to reclaim themselves from it.

Yeah, makes me grateful for my male friends. But, damn, how self-deluded could this guy be? He videotaped the rape, and it was the classic, "But I didn't know it was rape!" scenario: an intoxicated woman. How come so many see that scenario and go, "COOL!" instead of, "Let me help her." We're just not human to anyone who thinks and acts on the latter sentiment.

Why is this not on any of the feminist blogs? At least, not on any that I read...

As for me, I've given up on men ever treating me like a human being. The best I can do is keep the things I love away from them and hope they don't hurt me too badly.

Speaking as a male person ...

*headdesk*

(How do you tell the difference between someone who means it when they say something kind, and someone who says exactly the same words but is only doing so because they think it's a good way of getting what they want from you?)

I'm not going to try to apologize for this guy: he's inexcusable. But I wonder what kind of clues a psych assessment for sociopathy would turn up.

I almost wonder if he isn't trying to excuse himself from guilt by trying to argue his contributions, combined, as a net decrease in the amount of rape in the world---that if he, say, rapes four women but helps fifty rape victims recover, and the activism he does prevents a nebulous half-dozen rapes or whatever, he can consider himself Part Of What's Good. Like we're a collective, and not individual people---or like rape is a commodity he's ethically acquiring from other men, rather than stealing from women, which is sorta like the stories one hears occasionally about men punishing men by raping women close to them---it's perfectly logical if one ignores that women are people.

And having delved that deep into this asshole's potential psyche, I need some brain bleach. Or to hear that he's been accidentally crushed by a bowling ball that's accidentally fallen out of a seventeenth-story window as he was passing underneath.

That's horrifying. I don't want to believe that men are somehow programmed to rape, but this makes it seem like no amount of exposure to feminist thought or how rape deeply scars women makes the blindest bit of difference, at least in his case.

Depressing.

Could be that he manuvered himself into the post of conselor in order to have access to traumatized women. Perpetrators do that sort of thing. I had a friend who was molested by an immediate family member and this family member also happened to work as a conselor at a detention facility for teenage girls. Then there are the pervert catholic priests who "reached out" to childeren from disrupted homes.
And ya the guys who get all offended when they aren't automatically trusted without reservation are just insufferable. Good point about how men don't expect other men to trust them this way.

A Similar Case
(Anonymous)
2008-07-10 07:39 pm UTC (link)
The case of Kyle Payne is eerily reminiscent of this one:

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/06/05/2008-06-05_top_sexual_harassment_attorney_called_ch.html

"The founder of a Manhattan law firm dedicated to empowering women is a chauvinist pig with pierced genitals who wore a bondage collar at work, an explosive new suit charges."

Why does it strike me that male "women's rights activists" are little more than El Creepo bastards who lull hapless females into a false sense of security and trust by feigning pro-feminist inclinations, and then take advantage of that trust it in the most perverted ways possible. Based on these two cases and my own experiences, "male feminists" are predators who tell women what they want to hear in an attempt to sleep with them. To put it simply, they're full of shit.

I was so upset by this whole thing that I think I’d been missing a crucially important point here:

I think we should keep in mind that Kyle Payne WAS (in spite of all his claims to “support radical feminism” ) secretly PRO-PORNOGRAPHY.

As I read from that story, he used pornography. He also probably used child porn. He sexually assaulted a woman and made pornography of her. All this clearly shows a secret porn-sick mind while pretending to be a “pro-feminist”.

Now, in all this, again I can find a strong link between porn and sexual coercion I’d been researching about:

http://www.againstpornography.org/effectsandharms.html

Of course, Kyle ain’t the only porn user who coerced a woman (or women/girls) into sex. There are so many of them out there! And most of those porn-using sexual abusing men aren’t into any kind of feminism at all.

Yeah, that’s right. Radical feminism is certainly NOT the problem here,’cause men can choose to benefit from male privilege and deceive women in so many areas of life & society anyway.

Socialization to masculinity and the use of pornography (woman-hatred propaganda that is so awfully condoned) ARE the problems, the key factors for abusive behavior.

I still believe that we have to be very careful of male allies in the future though, try to find a way of making sure they are genuine or something like that. But how can we?

Male supremacy is so deeply entrenched that I’m being skeptical here… and pessimistic for now…

Maggie.

$11,000 bail?

Our criminal justice system is a waste of women's tax dollars.

Whenever I start to think that men need to be kept on a fucking leash of stricter legal/social controls, I think of pro-feminist men and tell myself to not become like what I hate.

Fuck.
